This German – Japanese research platform as a cooperation between the NeuroCure Clinical Research Center at Charité – University Medicine Berlin, Berlin, Germany and the Department of Neurology, Graduate School of Medicine, Chiba University, Chiba, Japan aims at establishing a prospective database comprising clinical datasets as well as imaging data and biospecimens from patients with autoimmune disorders of the central nervous system that are prevalent in both countries, multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica. A common clinical dataset, standardized acquisition protocols for neuroimaging (magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and spinal cord, optical coherence tomography of the retina and optic nerve) and standardized operating procedures for sampling of biospecimens will leverage the conduct of joint research projects that will investigate environmental factors, disease course, treatment response and prognosis of patients with these devastating autoimmune conditions. This effort will be paralleled by transfer of knowledge and technology including the deployment of German scientists to establish a „visual system research laboratory“ in Chiba. This ensures the utilization and advancement of technological and scientific innovation that was funded by public bodies in Germany and resulted in patent applications, and facilitates access to the highly innovative Japanese research environment for German scientists.
